Wellington High School Band Excels

The Wellington High School Band and its members completed an outstanding musical year in 2010-2011, representing the Village of Wellington throughout the state of Florida as well as across the country on a performance tour of California

Many individual band members have earned high honors this year.  Freshman Joey Hempfling was selected by audition for the 2011 Florida All-State Band, ranking him as 1 of the top 8 bass clarinetists in Florida.  Joey performed with the best musicians in Florida at the State Music Teacher Conference in January.  4 members of the Wellington High School Band were selected for the Tri-State Honor Bands, which performed at Florida State University on December 5th.  Seniors Jessica Galo, J.C. Menzies, and Sidney Oser, and junior Audrey Bridge were selected on the basis of musical skill and achievement, and were chosen to perform with the top 400 band students in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.  4 of our jazz band members – J.C. Menzies, Jesse Fallen, Gabe Ramey, and Robert Harter - were selected by audition for the Palm Beach County All-District Jazz Bands. They performed with the best jazz students of Palm Beach County in a concert on November 4th held in the Wellington High School Theater.   Audrey Bridge was also accepted for the University of Miami Honor Band, and performed with this top ensemble on February 12th.

March 12 found 56 of the “Mighty Wolverine Sound” Marching Band members flying to San Diego for the first leg of their performance tour of California.  The students performed on the USS Midway and at Knottsberry Farm, along with touring several tourist sites in Los Angeles, Hollywood and San Francisco.

On April 1, 71 members of the Wellington High School Band participated in the Florida Bandmasters Association State Solo and Ensemble Assessment.  All of the students who performed received high grades and praise from the collegiate-level judges.  Special congratulations go to the following band members who earned Superior ratings in Solo Performance:  juniors Audrey Bridge, Lindsay Flicker, Shawn Kelly, Jennifer Kovacs, Shea Koons, and Caitlin McNally; sophomores Jenny Bermudez, Zachary Delia, Ashley Domark, Holly Fabben, Paul Herrick, Fabiana Otero, Jean Pierre, Alina Robertson, Bryanna Shaw; and freshmen Sarah Holt and Angela Mozdzierz.  The Flute Trio and Drum Duet earned Superiors in Small Ensemble performance.   Finally, the WHS Majorettes and Jazz Band earned Superior Ratings in Large Ensemble performance.

The band’s Majorettes had a busy semester.  Under the direction of Coach Adrienne Brady, they competed in the TwirlMania International Baton Twirling Competition held at Walt Disney World February 18-21.  The girls earned 6 first place finishes in 10 events.  They performed in the Drum Majorettes of America regionals in March and earned first place in 9 out of 14 routines, earning second and third places in the other 5.  The WHS Majorettes also hosted the DMA Regional Springtime Queen competition at Wellington High School.   Along with running the entire event, our girls earned first place in 11 out of 12 events.

The WHS Band members and staff sincerely thank the entire Wellington community for its continued support.
